 Everything is Rhythm…Everything!

  • Students Age: 8 – 12
  • Level: Beginner
  • Day/Time: Mondays, 2:45-3:15pm / Face mask required.
  • Tuition: Follow Heartbeat’s regular class rate chart.

Class Description:
Music sticks, clave, buckets, wooden spoons, everyday items, and even your body can be a musical instrument. Rhythm is a natural extension of ourselves, and drumming, like dance, is a personal expression of the vibrations all around us. Drumming as an activity can be meditative and therapeutic. It is proven to relax and focus active minds and for children promotes cognitive thinking combining motion, fundamental mathematics as well as social interaction and teamwork through ensemble playing. Most of all, drumming is fun! In this class the students and I will explore together how rhythm can be produced from sounds all around us including everyday household items as well as musical instruments like hand drums and the drumset and work as a team to make music together and help each child find a voice through the drum.

Everything is Rhythm – Drumset

  • Level: Beginner-Intermediate. *See below for advanced level.
  • Day/Time: Mondays, 3:15-4:15pm / Face mask required.

Class Description:
Did you know that the drumset is an American invention, developed right here in the USA by the Jazz drummers of the early to mid-20th century? The unique feature of the drum set is that it’s an instrument that stick drummers also play with their feet, like a dancer! The drumset is like an orchestra unto itself-made up of many instruments that we project together as one voice and is an iconic instrument in the foundation of all contemporary dance and beat-based musical styles from Jazz to Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Pop, and also World Beat styles from cultures outside the USA. Our class will move progressively through the fundamentals of understanding the techniques, rhythms and musical styles that make the drummer a fantastic musician! What is your favorite music to play on the drumset? We will also focus on the individual interests of students in the arc of the class to stress individual expression along with group performance!

  • Level: Beginner-Intermediate. *See below for advanced level.
  • Day/Time: Mondays, 4:15-5:15 pm / Face mask required.

Class Description:
The drum, along with the voice, were our first musical instruments. Like the voice, the drum was also used for communication, but across father distances than a voice could carry. Playing a skinned drum with our own hands is a feeling like no other. It is relaxing and therapeutic and it is also fun, especially in a group setting like ours where together we will explore the sounds and rhythms of many cultures around the globe, like a travelogue, and progressively learn techniques for creating different sounds on the drums with our fingertips, palms, fists and even the snap of our fingers! We will learn about and play a variety of other hand percussion instruments as well. The study will be progressive focusing on beginning to advanced techniques and rhythms that we can play individually and together as an ensemble and you are welcome to bring your own drum(s).
